19 GOLD is a Taiwanese restaurant in Fremont. I read about it on Eater Seattle and it sounded interesting. I went with my grandparents. When we got there we walked inside and there were a lot of people inside. Somebody came pretty quickly and brought us to where we were sitting and it took kind-of a long time to get our food, but it was super good! On the walls there were swirls of metal and part of it was brick – it felt cozy and modern. Even though there were a lot of people, it wasn’t that loud.
The brown sugar milk boba is pretty sweet but not very flavorful. It has black tapioca pearls in it which are chewy. The deep fried Taiwanese fish cakes are kind-of soft with a very thin crispy crust and a sweet sauce. I really liked the fish cakes. We tried the 19 GOLD fries, which have popcorn chicken and their house sauce. I’ve never had fries like that! They fries were crispy and good, and the chicken had a good breading on it. The sauce was sweet and there was the right amount for the rest of the food.
My grandpa got the seafood lover Malatang. I tried some of his squid but I didn’t like it because it was really bland and chewy. I haven’t had squid before so I don’t know if that’s how squid usually is. My grandma and I shared the meat lover Malatang. It was a huge bowl of food with a rich, creamy, and kind-of spicy broth. It has tofu skin, crab meat sticks, lobster balls, quail eggs, kelp knot, fish tofu, fish balls, lotus root, pork, corn, potato, cabbage, bean sprouts, broccoli, tofu, and enoki mushrooms in it. The menu says “Malatang is named after its key ingredient, which is flavored with a combination of Sichuan pepper and dried chili pepper. The word Mala is composed of the Chinese characters for numbing and spicy. The name 19 GOLD comes from our Malatang broth, which consists of 19 different spices.” It was unlike anything I’d ever had before.
I’d like to go to 19 GOLD again to eat more deep fried Taiwanese fish cakes.
